The Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center (SPAWAR) is a robotics research and development department of the U.S. Navy. The center is located in San Diego, California. The facility conducts research in a multitude of areas, including robotic surveillance, non–lethal weapons systems, and lethal weapons systems.  Although SPAWAR is officially a U.S. Navy facility, its fields of research include many land based robotics systems.  SPAWAR also conducts research in robotics systems intended for law enforcement use. The center is not solely a military research and development facility. Current projects at SPAWAR include light man–portable mobile surveillance robots, “Tactical Mobile Robots” (robots developed to assist soldiers in urban warfare), and ROBART III (an advanced non-lethal weapons platform).     ”SPAWAR Systems Center San Diego,” http://www.spawar.navy.mil/depts/d30/d37/.
